The Word Made Flesh

​Rejoice! The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
During the Christmas season, we tend to get inundated with many different images that mask the true spirit of Christmas. Presents, Santa, and reindeer are some of the most popular images for the Christmas season. These images are entertaining of course, but they distract us from the glorious truth of Christmas. One can argue that presents are a symbol of Christ and Santa is based on Saint Nicholas, yet these images have taken on a life of their own! Even the wise men, the star, and the manger can become simple decorations that mean nothing if Jesus is not central. The beginning chapters in the books of Matthew and Luke give us those wonderful images that we all have come to associate with Christmas. But would it still be Christmas if we didn't mention the wise men, star, and manger? The first chapter of John proves that it is possible. John gives us the same story with only the most important part of Christmas mentioned... Christ! In only a few words john described the most extraordinary event in all of history; "the Word became flesh". The infinite eternal Word (God of the universe) clothed Himself in weakness. Christmas is about the incarnation, where God's answer to sin was made possible. He not only made it possible, but He also brings it to completion. Salvation is found in His: divine person, physical birth, perfect human life, physical death, resurrection, and eternal life. All that Christ does is necessary and is cause for great joy amongst those who trust in Him. The world wants nothing to do with this but will gladly capitalize on a few of the "less offensive" images of Christmas. Be on the alert!, it is easy to get distracted in the chaos of consumer Christmas and forget Christ. When we celebrate Christmas, let us remember that there is room for only one in the spotlight; Jesus Christ.
